Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #8869

vfwThe Medicine Lake VFW post was chartered on January 7, 1947 with 41 charter members. In 2002 the VFW post of Froid was merged into our post adding 19 members. Currently, the post has 43 members.

The post has two major functions, Memorial Day and Veterans Day. On Memorial Day we travel to area cemeteries and perform services honoring the veterans buried in those cemeteries. This tradition has been carried on every year since the post was chartered. The cemeteries where we perform the services are Eden Valley in Reserve, Nathanael in Dagmar, Volmer , and Medicine Lake. In 2002 and 2003 we also included Rock Springs. The wind always blows in Volmer, just ask the flag bearers. After the services in Medicine Lake we started a tradition of a hamburger B-B-Q at the 8 Ball for the general public.

VFW MemorialThe other major day in our post is Veterans Day. For the past 15 years we have held a hamburger BBQ at the 8 Ball to raise money for our major money raising project the Tom Prater Scholarship. Another part of the money raising for the Prater Scholarship is the raffle tickets we sell. We sell 200 tickets at $10 a tickets. We give away $1000 in drawings over a 5 week period. We keep $400 for our post and give $600 to the scholarship fund.

The present Commander of our post is Bill Soderholm and the Quartermaster is Jerry Jensen.
